About the Event

MonteVideo (MonteVideo210.org) is excited to announce the official

film lineup for the 3rd annual Raza Cósmica: A constellation of Latinx sci-fi cinema,

sponsored by the Mexican American Civil Rights Institute (MACRI). This year’s festival

will take place October 12-14, 2023 and spotlights films from Brazil, Colombia, the

Democratic Republic of Congo, France, Peru, the United Kingdom, and the United

States.

Raza Cósmica opens on October 12, 2023 with Xicanx Versus Aliens, a FREE screening at

ArtHouse at Blue Star featuring a curated selection of cosmic-infused short films

including Spaceship directed by Jorge G. Camarena and La Curandera Cumbiambera

directed by Ivan Flores. Films will be preceded by a live episode of the Xicanx Versus

Aliens original podcast hosted by Joaquín Muerte with special guests Carlie Guevara

(Spaceship) and filmmaker Ivan Flores.

Raza Cósmica continues on October 13, 2023 with a FREE outdoor screening of the

award-winning feature film Hummingbirds, directed by Silvia Del Carmen Castaños and

Estefanía “Beba” Contreras, and presented in partnership with the Latino Collection and

Resource Center at Central Library. Laredo filmmaker Estefanía “Beba” Contreras will be

in attendance to discuss her feature debut which will screen on the library’s 3rd floor

terrace.

On October 14, 2023, the Jump-Start Performance Company will be the site for a trio of

FREE screenings including the short film programs Excursions in Afrofuturism, which

features the world premiere of The Burden with filmmaker Tish Arana in attendance,

and Above the Clouds, which includes the short Do Digital Curanderas Use Eggs in Their

Limpias? by Roberto Fatal. The festival closes that evening with the Texas premiere of

Tiempos Futuros, the visionary feature film directed by V. Checa.

All screenings are free however seating is limited so tickets for individual Raza Cósmica

screenings can be reserved at razacosmica2023.eventbrite.com/. Community partners

for these screenings include the Mexican American Civil Rights Institute, the Latino

Collection and Resource Center at Central Library, Slab Cinema, the Jump-Start
